> Glasgow East by-election: Sleazy Labour mounts desperate canvassing frenzy ?.
Posted by Anglo - 07-23-08 19:47 - 0 comments
cosg.gif .23/07/2008

Labour has mounted a last-ditch desperate canvassing frenzy in the Glasgow East by-election by knocking on 10,000 doors in the constituency.

Labour Party activists hope to persuade thousands of floating voters, many of whom are disillusioned Labour supporters, to turn out in Thursday's poll, which is going down to the wire.

According to internal polling, the Scottish Nationalists have made huge inroads into Sleazy Labour's 13,500 majority from the 2005 General Election and are now less than a thousand votes behind.

Losing the contest in the 25th safest Labour seat in Scotland would prove a disaster for the party and heap more pressure on Gordon Brown to stand down.

Margaret Curran, a local MSP, was drafted in as Labour candidate at the last minute after four others refused to stand for a losing sleazy Labour party, despite pleas by sleazy Brown.

In a television debate last night Mrs Curran said she would vote against the Labour Government if she judged it necessary.

She said: "If it were required, and I was absolutely having to do that, I would. Voters tomorrow have a very clear choice to make over what kind of Scottish MP they want.

The SNP's final day of campaigning included a visit to a bowling club by Mr Mason, Nicola Sturgeon, the SNP deputy leader, and comedienne Elaine C Smith.

Alex Salmond, the SNP leader, has claimed the Glasgow East by-election is a test of Labour's Gordon Brown's strength and personal popularity in Scotland.

The Scottish First Minister argued the contest was a "tale of two governments" that gives voters the opportunity to compare the performance of the administrations in London and Edinburgh.

Opinion poll ratings show about half of Scots think Mr Salmond is doing a good job, while sleazy Brown's approval ratings are the lowest of any Prime Minister in recent times.

The Scottish Nationalists have unveiled a series of populist policies, including freezing council tax and phasing out prescription charges, since taking power in May last year.

Over the same period, sleazy Brown has lurched from one PR disaster to another, while having to deal with the fall-out of abolishing the 10p income tax rate, the credit crunch, soaring fuel prices and a faltering economy.

Mr Salmond said: "If the Labour Prime Minister can get to Glasgow East, I would be very happy to have an individual debate with the Labour Prime Minister, I would love to do that, but I do not expect to see him.

"Any by-election is a test of every party that contests it. One aspect of this by-election is that this is a tale of two governments."

Solidarity, the socialist party led by Tommy Sheridan, and its rival, the Scottish Socialist Party, will also be on the campaign trail.

> New rules tackle forced marriages in England?.
Posted by Anglo - 07-23-08 19:28 - 0 comments
cosg.gif 23/07/ 2008

The rules for people bringing in spouses to England from overseas are to change - in an attempt to tackle forced marriages.

The age limit will be raised from 18 to 21 and the foreign spouse will have to sign an agreement saying they will learn English before coming to England.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith says forced marriage is "a terrible thing".

English citizens who are going to marry foreigners will also need to register their intention before leaving England.

This will mean a young person will know in advance that a marriage will take place overseas and who their prospective partner will be.

The useless Border Agency will get a new power to revoke people's right to stay in the country if they are deemed to have abused the marriage visa system.

Agency staff will also be given guidance to help them spot any risk of abuse and spot those who might be vulnerable to being forced into a marriage .

And the agency will check that spouses from overseas who signed up to an agreement to learn English are fulfilling their promise. If they are not, their leave could be cancelled.

Ms Smith said: "Forced marriage leads to victims suffering years of physical and mental abuse and - in extreme cases - unlawful imprisonment and rape.

"It has no place in English society. The Labour government is determined to do everything it can to stamp it out and to ensure that victims receive the help and support they need.

"That is why we are raising the age limit for visas, checking anyone entering into a marriage does so of their own free will and demanding that those coming to England learn English."

> Thousands of Iraqi troops to drive out al-Qaeda ?.
Posted by Anglo - 07-23-08 15:30 - 0 comments
cosg.gif 23/07/2008

Iraq was today massing 30,000 troops in advance of an assault on one of al-Qaeda's surviving strongholds that will be a litmus test of the country's growing security forces.

Officials said a major clearing operation of the troubled central province of Diyala would be launched on Aug 1, spearheaded by Iraqi army and police personnel and backed by 10,000 American troops. If successful the operation will add to an impressive run of victories for the security strategy of the prime minister Nouri al-Maliki.

On his initiative, the country's army has made major inroads in militia-controlled Basra and eastern Baghdad this year. The al-Qaeda presence in Mosul has been significantly eroded by operations overseen by a well-regarded local commander, General Riyadh Tawfeeq.

A succession of disruption campaigns have already been waged in Diyala. American forces encountered major resistance last year in Operation Arrowhead Ripper, which was supposed to clear the city of Baquba, once declared the capital of al-Qaeda's putative Islamic State of Iraq.

Diyala is often described as a microcosm of Iraq with significant tensions between settled ethnic and sectarian populations. In addition its terrain ranges from mountains to densely vegetated river valleys criss-crossed with rat-runs for terrorist groups. It is also a major conduit for Iranian arms and supplies to Shia militias.

"Diyala remains the most dangerous province in Iraq," said Colonel Ali al-Karkhi, an Iraqi officer in the province.

"But understand that it is a mini-Iraq. There are Sunnis, Shiites, Kurds, Christians. The other provinces are far less mixed which is why it is so difficult to restore peace here. It is also the reason why people are so extremist."

Pro-government irregular forces have been established throughout the province but often these village guardians have borne the brunt of attacks by terrorist groups. A tractor laden with explosives killed seven members of a local patrol in the village of Wais on Monday.

Female suicide bombers have carried out nine deadly attacks in the province this year. To counter the tactic, the government has formed an all-women Daughters of Iraq contingents to guard public venues in disputed villages.

Three-quarters of a group of 130 women employed in towns in the Diyala River Valley are widows of police officers killed in terrorist attacks. The unarmed women will be tasked with frisking their female neighbours.

"In Iraqi culture it is very difficult to search women," said Captain Charles Knoll, the American commander overseeing the project. "We had to find a way to fill this gap."

If successful the assault on Diyala will strengthen Mr Maliki's hand in negotiations with the US over its troop strength in Iraq. He has announced that the American military should be withdrawn to barracks by 2010.

As its combat role is wound up, American army deployments to Iraq will be reduced dramatically.

> Islamic 'Bugs Bunny' programme 'spreads extremism' ?.
Posted by Anglo - 07-23-08 15:26 - 0 comments
shield.gif . 23/07/2008

Palestinian children's show Tomorrow's Pioneers shows Assud, the Jew-eating rabbit.

Assud the rabbit vows to "kill and eat Jews" and glorifies the maiming of "infidels" on the Palestinian children's show Tomorrow's Pioneers.

In one episode, Assud admits stealing money and is seen begging for mercy after young viewers and parents phone in demanding to cut off his hands as punishment.

At that point, Saraa, the 11-year-old presenter, intervenes and rules that the bunny should only have his ears severed because he has repented.

The rabbit, played by a costumed actor, is one of the main characters on the show broadcast in Gaza by the al-Aqsa channel, which is otherwise known as Hamas TV.

Religious leaders in England, where the channel can be viewed via satellite, criticised the programme, amid fears British children could be affected by the radical Islamic message.

Set up as a regional station prior to the Palestinian elections in January 2006, the al-Aqsa channel now airs on a satellite slot and has a substantial following across the Arab world.

Tomorrow's Pioneers was first aired in April 2007, and features young host Saraa Barhoum and her co-host, a large costumed animal.

The show originally featured a character called Farfur who resembled Mickey Mouse and urged children to fight against the Jewish community and form a world Islamic state.

Farfur was later replaced by a bumble bee called Nahoul, who told viewers to "follow the path of Islam, of martyrdom and of the Mujahideen".

He was 'martyred' earlier this year and replaced by Assud, who tells children in his first episode: "I, Assud, will get rid of the Jews, Allah willing, and I will eat them up."

In a discussion with 11-year-old host Saraa Barhoum, the young viewers are referred to as 'soldiers'.

Assud asks Saraa: "We are all martyrdom-seekers, are we not?"

"Yes, we are all ready to sacrifice ourselves for the sake of our homeland," she replies.

The phone-in show accepts calls from children as young as nine on topics about life in Palestine.

In an episode aired on July 11, Assud is seduced by Satan into stealing money from his father - an offence forbidden in Sharia law.

Host Saraa is then seen asking the studio audience what the rabbit's punishment should be.

Viewers, including parents and children, phoned in demanding that his hands should be severed to teach him a lesson.

After taking several calls, Saraa asks the children: "Do you think we should go ahead and chop off Assud's hand now?"

The terrified rabbit slumps to his knees and pleads: "No, no Saraa, I'm begging you."

In the end, Saraa - acting as judge and jury - rules that his ear should be cut off instead, but this was not shown on the programme.

During an episode aired in February, Assud vows to kill and eat all Danish people over the cartoon images of the Prophet Mohammed which appeared in Danish newspapers.

He pledges to assassinate the illustrator and Saraa also agrees that she would martyr herself for the cause of Palestine.

Saraa, who has seven brothers and sisters, was invited to host the show after entering a singing competition.

Last year she defended the programme, insisting it was not responsible for spreading extremism.

The show is regularly translated and posted online by The Middle East Media Research Institute, an independent media monitoring group based in the United States.

The al-Aqsa channel was unavailable for comment.

> MUSLIM HATE CLERIC HAMZA , LOSES EXTRADITION BID ?.
Posted by Anglo - 07-23-08 15:16 - 0 comments
shield.gif 23/07/2008

Radical Muslim cleric Abu Hamza, who was jailed for stirring up religious hatred, has been refused permission to appeal to the House of Lords over a decision to extradite him to America on alleged terrorism charges.

Senior judge Sir Igor Judge refused to certify that his case raised a point of law of public importance to go before the law lords, the highest court in the land.

The Egypt-born preacher from west London still has to complete serving a seven-year jail term in England for inciting murder and race hate.

The US authorities want him to face trial on charges which include providing support to al Qaida.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith formally approved the extradition in February.

His lawyers have been fighting his extradition since the US authorities first applied for him to be sent for trial in May, 2004.

> MUSLIM TERROR BOMB PLOTTERS LOSE APPEAL ?.
Posted by Anglo - 07-23-08 15:12 - 0 comments
cosg.gif 23/07/2008

Five Muslim men jailed for life for plotting a series of bomb attacks to rival the 9/11 New York atrocities have lost challenges against their convictions.

Omar Khyam, Waheed Mahmood and Jawad Akbar, from Crawley, West Sussex, Anthony Garcia, of Barkingside, east London, and Salahuddin Amin, of Luton, Bedfordshire, were all found guilty of conspiracy to cause explosions likely to endanger life after a lengthy trial at the Old Bailey last year.

At the Court of Appeal in London three judges rejected their bids to overturn their convictions.

The jury was told by the prosecution that the five plotted to bomb public places such as the Ministry of Sound nightclub in London and the giant Bluewater shopping centre in Kent using chemical fertiliser bombs.

Khyam, Mahmood and Garcia were told by the trial judge that they would have to serve a minimum of 20 years in jail.

Akbar and Amin were told they would have to serve at least 17-and-a-half years.

Sir Igor Judge, Mr Justice Bean and Mrs Justice Dobbs reduced Garcia's minimum term to 17-and-a-half years. They also cut the minimum term in Amin's case to 16 years and nine months.

During their recent appeals against conviction, criticisms were raised over the trial judge's handling of their case. Patrick O'Connor QC, representing Amin, giving an overview of the case, said criticisms related to rulings made by Judge Sir Michael Astill and his "approach to various issues".

Khyam and Garcia were also convicted of having 600kg (1,300lb) of ammonium nitrate fertiliser. Khyam was further found guilty of having aluminium powder for the explosives.

The gang was arrested after the fertiliser was found stored in a warehouse in Hanwell, west London, in early 2004.

> Tribunal blow to police as they are ordered to delete convictions ?.
Posted by Anglo - 07-23-08 14:57 - 0 comments
cosg.gif 22/ 7/2008

POLICE could be forced to erase the names of thousands of people with minor convictions from their databases following a landmark ruling against Greater Manchester Police.

An independent tribunal ordered GMP and four other forces to delete details of people who complained about previous petty convictions being kept on file.

Data protection bosses claimed it was unnecessary for police to keep information about the offences, all of which were for relatively petty crimes and dated back to the 1970s.

But senior police officers say the ruling could open the floodgates and could now allow dangerous individuals to conceal their pasts when applying for jobs or voluntary work.

The landmark case centred on a complaint made by a Manchester woman who had been convicted of stealing £100 from a cash machine in 1983. She was given a suspended sentence and was never in trouble with the police again.

But 24 years later, when the woman applied for a visa to travel abroad, details of her conviction appeared on a clearance form.

The woman complained to the Information Commissioner, who agreed that the force were breaking data protection laws by continuing to store the information.

GMP appealed the case at the Information Tribunal. But the independent panel this week upheld the initial decision and ordered the force to delete the conviction from the Police National Computer.

Complaints brought by individuals against four other forces – Humberside, Staffordshire, Northumbria and West Midlands – were also upheld.

One record held by Humberside Police related to the theft of a 99p packet of meat in 1984. Another held by West Midlands Police referred to a theft which took place more than 25 years ago for which the individual was fined £25.

The tribunal heard evidence that offenders who kept out of trouble 20 years after a conviction were statistically only 0.8 per cent likely to re-offend.

A 50-page written judgement states that the forces should not have kept information on file about offences which had taken place so long ago and were ‘no longer relevant’.

The five forces are understood to be planning a High Court appeal and fear the decision could open the door to thousands of people convicted of minor offences when young to apply to have their criminal record removed.

A GMP spokeswoman said: “We are considering the implications of the tribunal ruling and our possible routes of appeal.”

Under current policy, criminal records remain on the computer for up to 100 years and can be disclosed to third parties such as the Criminal Records Bureau.

The Association of Chief Police Officers, which represents police forces across the country, warned the decision could overturn guidelines introduced after the Soham murders in 2003.

Ian Readhead, a deputy chief constable and the body’s lead on data protection, said: “We are very disappointed with the decision, which could have far-reaching implications for the police service as a whole. The Bichard Inquiry which followed the tragedy of the Soham murders recommended that forces should reconsider the way in which records are managed.

“We will now take some time to discuss these implications with the service and decide on the most appropriate course of action.”

Several complaints were reported to police about school caretaker Ian Huntley but not passed on to his employers during the vetting process.

> Holiday mum's passport fury after being allowed to travel on another persons passport?.
Posted by Anglo - 07-23-08 14:53 - 0 comments
cosg.gif 23/ 7/2008

A HOLIDAYMAKER was able to fly home from Turkey using a stranger's passport - after staff at FOUR security checkpoints failed to spot the difference.

Hazel Ellaby, 29, was given the wrong passport by her hotel when she checked out - and only realised when she arrived home in Ashton under Lyne.

By then, she had passed through two international airports and four checkpoints - although she is nine years older than other holidaymaker, Kirstie Willett.

Check-in staff at Bodrum Airport didn't realise that Hazel was carrying Kirstie's passport when she checked in and issued her a boarding pass in her own name.

The contradictory documents were then `checked' by Turkish passport control and scanned by staff at the gate, but she was waved through and allowed to board the XL Airlines flight.

After it touched down at Manchester Airport at 3.20am, Hazel then passed through Immigration Control at Terminal Two and collected her bags.

The series of blunders has raised serious security concerns and the Border Agency is investigating.

Cafe worker Hazel, a mum-of-one, said: "It's ridiculous airport security is a massive issue, but no one even noticed I had the wrong passport".

"I haven't been able to sleep. I keep thinking what could have happened if I'd been stopped in Turkey after going through with the wrong passport.

"I could have been locked up in a Turkish jail. My eight-year-old daughter Nicole was staying with my mum - I might not have seen her for months."

Hazel flew out to Turkey with boyfriend Martin Jess, 47, a week ago. They stayed in Altinkum and met Kirstie, from Sheffield, around their hotel pool, but spoke only briefly.

Hazel said: "I don't know how the hotel mixed up our passports. Kirstie still has two weeks of her holiday left, fortunately, so we can send her passport out to her and she'll bring mine home with her.

"I couldn't believe it when I found out. Martin handed me my passport when we got home to put in a safe place and that's when we noticed.

"It's nice to be mistaken for a 20-year-old, but I do think this raises serious concerns."

Kirstie was contacted at her hotel in Altinkum and she said: "It's shocking.

"I don't think it's right that someone can travel on my passport. I'm livid that this has been allowed to happen."

A spokesman for XL Airlines said the firm would contact Bodrum airport to raise concerns about ground staff's level of scrutiny, but said the responsibility lay with the airport and immigration control.

A spokesman for the Border Agency said: "We are aware of a reported breach of border control at Manchester Airport and inquiries are under way to establish what happened.

"As part of the investigation, we will speak to the airline to determine how the individual managed to board the plane and leave Turkey. We will also speak to the officers on duty in Manchester to establish the circumstances of her arrival."

A Manchester Airport spokesman said it was a matter for the Border Agency.

> English soldier Grenade hero awarded George Cross ?.
Posted by Anglo - 07-23-08 14:37 - 0 comments
cosg.gif 23/07/2008.

An English Royal Marine who threw himself on a grenade to save his comrades' lives is to receive the George Cross.

Lance Corporal Matthew Croucher, 24, from Solihull, in the West Midlands triggered a trip wire in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, in February.

He immediately dropped to the ground and lay across the grenade, being blown into the air as it went off.

The George Cross is one of the highest decorations that can be awarded for acts of gallantry.

L/Cpl Croucher said: "All I could do in the moment was shout out 'grenade' before diving on top of it."

His bag was crammed with equipment which cushioned the explosion. His three comrades suffered just cuts and bruises while L/Cpl Croucher was thrown in the air.

He added: "It was incredible. I escaped with only a nose bleed and a headache."

His parents said they had had no idea what had happened to him.

His mother Margaret Croucher, 55, a teacher in Birmingham, said she got three text messages from him while he was away, one of which read: "Being put forward for a citation, might meet the Queen."

She said: "Obviously I was very intrigued but we didn't get the full story until he got back and we read about it in the papers.

"I am obviously immensely proud but it was a typical act from him. It was not the first time he had put his life at risk."

His father, Richard, 57, described him as a very "lucky man".

L/Cpl Croucher is expected to receive his honour from the Queen at Buckingham Palace in the autumn.

He was deployed to Afghanistan attached to Taunton, England - based 40 Commando Royal Marines last autumn.

Lieutenant Colonel Stuart Birrell, the unit's commanding officer, said: "This was a magnificent act which absolutely typified the highest traditions of commando service."

> Hackers target British Labour Government websites with computer virus ?.
Posted by Anglo - 07-23-08 14:30 - 0 comments
cosg.gif 23/07/2008

In the past fortnight Eastern European hackers have infected more than a thousand British websites with the virus, known as Asprox, including those belonging to local Labour government offices and the NHS, it has been claimed.

Asprox last week infected the Norfolk NHS website, which is used by thousands of people every day to access local services. Twelve local council websites, including that of Hackney Council in London, were also compromised, putting at risk hundreds of residents logging on to pay their council tax.

Web experts have said that unlike conventional computer viruses, which spread through email or illicit websites, Asprox lies on mainstream sites, waiting to infect the computers of those who visit. Once it does, it can allow a hacker to access sensitive information, and steal files, emails or passwords.

Security experts say that it has so far spread to about two million computers worldwide. Any computer not protected by the most up-to-date anti-virus software is vulnerable to the virus.

It is thought that several people have discovered that their computers have been infected only after they found money had been removed from their bank accounts or that they had suffered other frauds committed using their personal data.

Detective Constable Bob Burls, from the Metropolitan Police computer crime unit, confirmed that there had been a sudden rise in the number of computers being infected by Asprox.

He said: "The virus got into the job pages of a local council's internet page. It's a new thing that people who visit mainstream websites are clobbered."

"We've dealt with two major websites in as many weeks," he said.

Yuval Ben-Itzhak, the chief technical officer of Finjan, the internet security company who first exposed the threat of Asprox, said: "This is very serious threat. Five years ago when your computer got infected by a virus, you noticed immediately that your PC was broken. These days, you don't notice anything."

The virus has not been confined to Labour Government sites.

Visitors to Nigella Lawson's official website were last week also put at risk, as the chef's home page was attacked by Asprox. However, a spokesman for Ms Lawson said that the problem was dealt with "instantly" and that none of her fans was infected.

> British soldier killed by bomb in Afghanistan ?.
Posted by Anglo - 07-23-08 14:26 - 0 comments
cosg.gif 23/07/2008

A British soldier has been killed in Afghanistan's Helmand province, the fourth NATO serviceman to die in four days.

The soldier, a member of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers who was attached to 2nd Battalion the Parachute Regiment, died of his wounds after being injured by a roadside bomb during fighting with insurgents in the Kajaki district of the troubled southern province yesterday, said the Ministry of Defence.

A further two British soldiers, both members of 2 Para, were injured. Next of kin have been informed.

“At 18.18hrs local time on Tuesday 22 July 2008 their routine patrol came under enemy fire. Whilst returning fire one soldier from 2nd Battalion the Parachute Regiment was injured by a mine," said the MoD in a statement.

"While leaving the scene after suppressing the enemy, a vehicle other soldiers were travelling in hit a suspected IED. One soldier from 2nd Battalion the Parachute Regiment was injured and one soldier from the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers sustained serious injuries.

"The soldier from the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, despite the best medical efforts at the scene, died a few minutes later. All casualties were extracted to Bastion medical facilities where they received medical care. Their injuries are not life threatening."

The death was the first British fatality in Afghanistan this month. Last month 13 British troops died, including the first British servicewoman to die on active service in Afghanistan, the second highest death toll since operations began in November 2001.

The latest death took to 139 the number of international soldiers killed this year in fighting with the Taleban-led insurgency. More than 2,600 people have died in insurgency-related violence this year.

“Our hearts and minds are with the family and loved ones of this fine soldier who died yesterday. This soldier died honourably, helping bring security to Afghanistan,” said Captain Mike Finney, a spokesman for NATO's International Security Assistance Force.

Meanwhile, an improvised bomb planted by the Taleban killed a district police chief in the eastern province of Nangarhar.

Qayoom Khan, the police chief of the province’s Chaparhar district, was killed when the bomb blew up his car, said Sayed Mohammad Palawan, the district administration chief. Two other police officers were wounded in the blast.

“It was the work of the Taliban,” said Mr Palawan.

Sex Pistols legend John Lydon has denied reports that Bloc Party singer Kele Okereke was the victim of racist abuse from the rock veteran and his entourage.

Okereke claims he was the victim of unprovoked abuse by Lydon and members of his crew at the weekend in Barcelona, where both were performing at the Summercase festival.

The Bloc Party front man alleged he was attacked by onlookers after he asked the singer if he would consider reforming one of his favourite bands, Public Image Ltd.

Lydon then allegedly became intimidating and aggressive while members of his entourage responded with a racist tirade including the statement "your problem is your black attitude".

Okereke claims he was subsequently punched in the face and head resulting in severe facial bruising and cuts to his face and body.

He said: "Someone as respected and as intelligent as Lydon should know better than to bring race into the equation, or socialise with and encourage those who hold such narrow-minded attitudes.

"I am disappointed that someone I held with such high regard turns out to be such a bigot."

Lydon has denied the claims, however, and claims he is a victim of jealousy from other bands after signing autographs for four hours.

He said: "We are in the middle of a wonderful tour, after 30 years we are achieving a true unity in our audience. They are multi varied, all ages, all races, creeds and colours. When you are at a festival with bands who are jealous fools, lies and confusion usually follow.

"If they need publicity so badly this is the allegation universe they run into. "I feel very sorry for a man that needs to lie about what was a perfect evening."

He added: "The trouble was brought to us, resulting in those causing the trouble being physically removed by festival security.

"Grow up and learn to be a true man." "When you have achieved as much as I have, come back and talk to me."

The incident was witnessed by a number of other musicians, including Ricky Wilson of the Kaiser Chiefs, and Foals frontman Yannis Philippakis.

A spokesman for Wilson confirmed he stepped in to break up the fight but declined to comment any further.

Philippakis told the crowd when performing at the Latitude Festival in Suffolk the day after the incident: "So we were in Spain yesterday and I got into a fight with Johnny Rotten.

"I don't know why I'm telling you all this, but I was handcuffed and we nearly didn't make it."

The Edinburgh Dungeon said the one-day event is in revenge for the Battle of Falkirk, fought 710 years ago July 21st, at which more than 2,000 Scots were slaughtered by the Auld Enemy.

English visitors will only be allowed entry if they sign a scroll swearing allegiance to Scotland, while those from other countries will be encouraged to bring in items deemed 'typically English’ to be smashed.

The attraction, which is visited by 200,000 people per year insisted the measures were a fitting tribute to the Scots soldiers who were killed and their leader, William Wallace.

But it faces a growing backlash from English tourists appalled that they were being singled out for something that happened so long ago.

Victoria Price, 26, from Manchester, currently holidaying in Edinburgh, said: “I was planning to visit the Dungeon because I had heard it was fun. But I wouldn’t give them my money now.

“The Battle of Falkirk was more than 700 years ago for Heaven’s sake. It should be put in the past, but it seems some people find that very hard.”

King Edward I, known as the Hammer of the Scots, decided to crush them in revenge for Wallace’s victory at Stirling Bridge in 1297 and assembled a massive army of more than 20,000 men.

In the battle, on July 22 1298, Wallace’s army of only around 6,000 men was destroyed by Edward’s longbows, although at the cost of almost 2,000 English casualties.

The attraction has a feature about Wallace, in which a ghost of the legendary Scots leader urges Scots to fight on against the invading “tyrannical” English.

Played by John Smeaton, one of the heroes who prevented last year’s terror attack at Glasgow Airport, he tells how thousands of Scottish soldiers were massacred.

Ian Scouller, the Dungeon’s manager, said: “People, not just from Scotland but from all over the world, said we should do something to commemorate that battle and get a bit of revenge.

“One visitor said we should mark the day by banning the English. We welcome more than 600 visitors every day. Many of them are English, and I expect we will take a hit in the pocket.”

But he claimed that Wallace and the Scots soldiers who fell that day would approve, adding: “The only way the English will be allowed in is if they sign a scroll pledging allegiance to Scotland - the kind of thing Edward I routinely did to Scots.”

Mr Scouller, a Glaswegian, also detailed another way for Scots to “gain revenge”.

He said: “People are invited to bring scones, tea bags, English literature, fine bone china or anything else typically English. We plan to smash them with a sword like the one Wallace carried.”

David Ross, Convener of the Society of William Wallace, described the ban on English visitors as “comical” and praised the Dungeon for marking the battle.

He added: “I’m sure it is meant tongue in cheek, but the English did far worse things to the Scots in Wallace’s time.”

The Edinburgh Dungeon is one of Edinburgh’s five most popular tourist attractions and is part of a chain, with other branches in London, York, Hamburg and Amsterdam.

In addition to its Wallace feature, exhibits include a torture chamber with thumb-screws, flesh tearers and head crushers, once used in Scotland to punish criminals.

Visitors also hear tales of some of Scotland’s most macabre criminals including notorious body snatchers Burke and Hare and cannibal Sawney Bean
