My mother had quite a simple view of Old Nick; Satan = the pope. That sounded pretty good to me, and would certainly explain all the shenanigans in the vatican and in the papist priesthood, who have created a hell on earth during their reign, and today condemn millions of their followers to short and painful lives by not permitting them to use condoms in AIDS-ridden Africa. A truly satanic policy!
See Revelation 12:12: "Woe, woe unto the inhabitants of the earth, and of the sea, for THE DEVIL is come among you, for he knows he hath but a short time".

Ah, the advantages of heathenism; you can put the fear of more than one god into children.

Satan only actually kills around 10 people in the scriptures, I think, whilst God lays waste to entire civilisations.

As a Heathen, I reject both jehova, jesus, satan, mary, allah, angels and archangels and the rest of the desert god's ludicrous pantheon; they fit ill into our green and fertile land, unlike our own Gods and Goddesses. However, the devil has got a very bad press over the years. One good book to read is James Blish's "Black Easter" where Satan points out that we've only heard one side of the story, and he's a pretty good guy after all. Milton certainly gave him fair treatment in "Paradise Lost", where he's actually the hero.

Anne Rice gives the Devil a better outlook in her book Memnoch the Devil, butthen she was raised a Catholic as well.
You get the impression that he is just doing Gods dirty work when he takes The Vampire Lestat on a trip to Hell and beyond.

Yes, if I remember correctly; in one of the books David tells Lestat that he heard God and the Devil having a conversation- Memnoch complains to God that he doesn't like his job, and God tells him that he needs him to do it for a while longer. Memnoch actually tries to help mankind in Memnoch the Devil; he teaches them how to make the wheel etc and he and some other angels have relations with women (which, I think, God doesn't appreciate in the book.)
But at the end we're left to realise that either God or the Devil (or both) could be lying- and Lestat accidently infuses new life into Christianity, which he regrets. And who wouldn't?
I think Anne Rice "writing for the lord" now- but I think she has her own personal peace with God, which she worked out herself. Good luck to her if that's true- it's better than being indoctrinated into letting a priest "make peace" with any God for you. It's better that your relationship with whatever god or gods you worship is more personal rather than letting a middle man have power over you.
There have only been two Catholic priests that I have ever been able to stand- and that was because they, unlike the rest of the clergy, didn't try to brainwash you or become all self-important the minute you walked through the church door. The other priests I have encountered, I absolutely despised.
If there is an all evil entity, I'd say it was in them; one of them was asking for money straight away at the beginning of the buffet during a funeral I attended.
