Coppergate Helmet
(SKU: CGHPOSTER)
The Englisc Warrior Collection - The Coppergate Helmet
A Saxon North interpretation of the famous English Coppergate helmet. The poster borrows styles from various periods of Anglo-Saxon England, and is also presented with the following text.
"Dating back to the 8th century, the Coppergate (York helmet) is a magnificent example of English craftsmanship.
The original helmet was crafted from iron and copper alloy, and was intricately decorated with interlaced animal motifs along the nasal guard.
Two cheek protectors (hléorberg), along with a mail neck curtain provided excellent protection for the wearer.
The top or roof (hróf) of the helmet was inscribed in Latin with the following - "In the name of our Lord Jesus, the Holy Spirit, God and all, we pray. Amen. Oshere. Christ."
It is not clear who Oshere was, although there is the possibility that he was either the owner or the craftsman. Either way, the owner was most likely wealthy and powerful, and possibly even a Northumbrian Thegn.
The Coppergate helmet to the right is loosely based on the original. The image combines both the Coppergate and Sutton Hoo styles, with runes which read "Lest we forget" in homage to our Anglo-Saxon forefathers."
